    How to Beat Your Winter Skin Blues

    With the onset of autumn and winter fast approaching, a lot of us are experiencing dry or drier skin. Our initial reaction can be to rush out and buy a heavier or more emollient moisturiser. While in some cases this is needed, for the most of us that is not the case.

    Why do I say that?

    To start with let me explain what a moisturiser is and isn't. The word moisturiser is actually quite misleading as it does not add any moisture to the skin. As we age our skin gets thinner allowing moisture to escape. The moisturiser simply acts as a barrier, prevents this water loss and helps maintain existing moisture levels in the skin.

    So how do we keep and maintain baby soft and comfortable skin during winter?

    Here are a few recommendations to go by:

    1) Only use very Gentle Cleansers and Scrubs.

    Sometimes our tendency is to scrub those dead skin cells away as fast as we can. This however can do a lot of damage to the skin. Rather try an exfoliating lotion like Clinique Clarifying Moisture Lotion or Shiseido Bio-performance Intensive Clarifying Essence. These chemically exfoliate the skin without harsh granules to scratch or irritate the skin.

    2) Use water-rich products rather than oil-rich.

    Sometimes all the skin really needs is literally water or moisture rather than oils in the form of a moisturiser. Especially if you are in a particularly drying environment such as air-conditioning, high winds, flying or extreme cold. In this case make sure your skin is moist before applying your moisturiser.

    There are some great spitzes on the market that really hydrate the skin such as:

    House of Herbs Organic Rose Hydrating Mist, Claudalie Grape Water, Shiseido The Skin Care Soothing Spray. Clinique also have a whole range called Moisture Surge and it contains a gel-cream, eye gel and a face spray. These are all great to stop your skin from dehydrating. Personally I always carry a small bottle of face spray with me in my handbag, because most of these sprays you can use over the top of your makeup. So use them throughout the day, whenever you feel the need to.

    3) Remember the skin south of your neck too.

    During winter, dry scaly skin on your legs, knees and elbows is not uncommon. A great way to solve this for me is to pour body oil in my bathwater. You don't need much - the same amount as if you would be applying it directly to your skin but it's the lazy person's way of making sure your whole body is covered in oil. Also pure olive oil is fantastic, especially for the elbows and knees. Joan Collins recommends this.

    4) Keep your lips and eyes well maintained.

    As both these areas have thinner skin and fewer lipids in the skin than the rest of the face, it is vitally important to look after them well. Not by applying heavy creams as this will only block the pores and cause milia and other problems but by using products that will retain the moisture levels.

    5) Remember your hair.

    Hair takes a lot of beating through the colder months. In summer it's the sun, salt and chlorinated water, in winter it's the hairdryer and the cold. Apply regular hair masks or oils. I love Unrefined Coconut Oil in my hair but some prefer olive oil. Whatever it is you like to use make sure you do it regularly.

    Following these suggestions, not only will your skin beat the winter blues but you will also develop great skincare routines that you will take with you into next summer.

    How to Break a Bad Habit: 5 Powerful Tips

    How to break a bad habit is a topic that puzzles many people. Very often we persist in behaviors that can have negative and sometimes life-threatening consequences, yet like the Energizer Bunny, you just keep on going and going and going...

    For starters, it is helpful to consider what is meant by habit. Our friend Webster defines it as "a customary behavior pattern." What is also known is that thought, feeling and action can be broken down into two broad categories, conscious and subconscious.

    The conscious mind refers to the part of the self that is critical and analytical; it thinks and it reasons. This is the part of the self that recognizes that whatever rewards or satisfaction are being derived from the problem behavior are outweighed by its consequences.

    Your subconscious mind refers to the part of the self that is habitual and automatic, it does not think or reason it simply responds in the way that it has been conditioned to do. Most habits are benign and even useful like brushing your teeth, automatically using a turn signal when driving and so on. Yet habits can also be horribly destructive such as in the case of those persons who continue to use alcohol and drugs in a destructive fashion even when the negative results are obvious.

    So is there anything that can be done? Sometimes it is necessary to get outside help, especially if the situation poses an imminent health and safety. Yet whether you get professional assistance or not, here a five tips you may find helpful.

    Expect it to feel strange at first when you stop. Try this experiment. Lace your fingers together and notice which thumb rests on top-the right or left one. Now separate them and intentionally re-clasp with the opposite thumb on top. Feels strange, right? Any change good or bad will feel awkward at first-it usually takes about a month for it to feel normal for you.

    Get past the notion of helplessness. It is a popular view that many problem behaviors are lifelong and uncontrollable, yet the science behind this notion is poor at best. Quite a few people for example, drink alcohol heavily during their college years and then go on to discontinue this unhealthy behavior as the responsibilities of work and family take on more prominent roles. Believe it or not the most successful method of getting past a problem behavior is simply deciding to stop. Expect to evolve.

    See the behavior in the total context of your life. Remember the Rolling Stones song about "I can't get no, SATISFACTION!" Is it that you are an "addict" or that you are simply unhappy with your life in general? Public health data tells us that while 10% of doctors and lawyers smoke, over 60% of waitresses are smokers. The former group probably tends to find life more satisfying than the latter. What active steps would you have to take to improve your personal, professional and spiritual life? The drinking/smoking/drugging/overeating is certainly not getting the job done!

    Intentionally remove the cues of the old behavior. Although we scarcely recognize it, most of our actions follow a predictable sequence of events, where a stimulus provokes an unconscious reaction. Do you drink to excess with a certain group of people? Stop hanging out with them!

    Remember you are worth it! You may feel ashamed of yourself because of your past behaviors. This can set a trap where you don't feel worthy of a better life, which in turn causes you to dull this pain with the habit that has complicated your existence. Consider accepting this idea. You are worthwhile simply because you were born a child to human parents. There has never been anyone quite like you in the past, nor will there be another person exactly like you in the future. There is a reason that you are here right now-find it.

    Share the Spirit of Thanksgiving By Giving

    I'm sure we all have a very many things to be thankful for this holiday season. I for one am thankful to have life, family, friends, and of course YOU as a reader.
    In the spirit of giving, I'm going to try to share a pie and a blanket this year. If I can squeeze in some time to help in the soup kitchen, I might even make a showing at my local shelter. Hey, how about you?

    Why not share your good fortune with those who are less than fortunate as well?

    Not all homeless persons are drunks and derelicts. Most are people who were just victims of a bad turn in life. Some are military vets, even more are moms, dads, children, elderly persons. Perhaps you too can volunteer some of your meal or time this Thanksgiving with a local shelter? OR, maybe you could help someone on the streets with some food, a drink, some clothes and a blanket? It may not seem like much of a gesture to you, but it will mean a great deal to the persons you help, and they can really use it. It's getting colder, and these people aren't just homeless--they are our fellow man. It could've been anyone of us out there, so let's pay it forward by showing that we care. The more help we provide, the more we help to improve the quality of their lives. Surely, that is one more step closer to self-sustainability for these people and their families.

    Thanksgiving Recipe Ideas

    When turkeys go gobbling all the way to your Thanksgiving menu, why not pamper your taste-buds with some more cool recipes? So cook up some toothsome Thanksgiving dishes and let your folks gobble up the gastronomical delights with gusto! Plan a peachy recipe this Thanksgiving and warm up your dear ones for a great holiday feast. And with autumn's plentiful yield, you'll never run short of the choicest things to rev up your Thanksgiving menu. Now to help you tickle the appetites of your friends and family in a festive crescendo, here are some Thanksgiving recipe ideas that you'll love to try out this November 23.

    Shrimp-ly Yours

    1/2 lb shrimp, peeled and de-veined
    2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese
    1 (8 ounce) jar cocktail sauce
    1 (16 ounce) package buttery round crackers
    1 lime

    Put the cream cheese at the center of the serving platter. Mix together the cocktail sauce and shrimp and pour it over cream cheese. Slice one lime in half. Squeeze one half over the cocktail sauce and cut the other half into wedges to garnish your Shrimp dip. Now place the crackers and lime wedges around edge of plate and serve. This makes one mouth-watering appetizer for Thanksgiving meal. So let your folks stay boggled at your amazing culinary skill !

    Thanksgiving Roasted Turkey

    1 turkey (approx. 16 to 20 pounds) Stuffing of your choice

    First, thaw your Thanksgiving turkey in the refrigerator, giving some time to get the giblet broth ready the day before roasting the bird. The turkey legs are to be removed from the leg sockets or skin crossing the tail. If needed, you may also take out the leg clamps from the body. Now, you also need to remove giblets and neck from the body cavities of the turkey.

    Just before roasting, you need to spoon in the stuffing into the body cavities of the Thanksgiving bird. But do not put more than 3/4 cup stuffing per pound of turkey. Do not pack the stuffing too hard, or it will not get sufficiently hot by the time of cooking. Now you can tuck the legs back under the band of skin or reset legs into the sockets. You can also tie legs together with string if you find the leg clamp removed.

    Now place the Thanksgiving turkey on a shelf in a shallow roasting pan with its breast side up. Fix a meat thermometer into the center of a thigh muscle so that the bulb doesn't touch the bone. Now cover it with foil, allowing some space between the turkey and foil. Tighten the foil over the drumsticks and neck.

    Roast it until the meter of the oven reads 180 degrees F and juices start oozing out. It takes about 4 to 5 hours for a stuffed bird. Now put the bowl containing the extra bit of stuffing in the last half hour of roasting. Remember to remove the foil in the last 30-45 minutes to allow the turkey turn a yummy brown. Here, your Thanksgiving turkey is ready now! Take the turkey out from the oven and keep it covered loosely in foil before serving hot.

    Say Cheese

    4 cups macaroni
    ½ lb shredded Cheddar cheese
    1/2 lb shredded mozzarella cheese

    Boil a big pot of slightly salty water. Add the macaroni and cook for about 8-10 minutes. When that's done, drain the water out and place in a microwave-proof bowl. Scatter the Cheddar and mozzarella cheese over the macaroni and microwave on medium-high power in intervals of 30 seconds until the cheese melts. Finally, stir a little to spread the cheese evenly over the macaroni and serve. Now this dish is a good item to pep up the appetites and is guaranteed to have your folks cheezing on Thanksgiving!

    Pumpkin Pie

    1 unbaked 10-inch pie shell
    3 beaten eggs
    1 tbsp melted butter
    3/4 cup dark brown sugar
    2 plus cups cooked pumpkin
    1 cup scalded milk
    1/2 tsp salt
    1-2 tsp cinnamon
    1-2 tsp ground ginger
    1/4 to 1/2 tsp nutmeg
    1/4 tsp cloves (optional)
    2 ounces dark molasses (optional)
    1 small can evap. milk

    Daub the pie shell with melted butter and then refrigerate. Next, cook the pumpkin, brown sugar, salt and molasses in a pan over moderate heat until the mixture gets thick (approx 5-7 minutes). Stir in the evaporated milk, scalded milk and the beaten eggs and cook it over low heat for another 5 minutes. Pour this into a pie shell and bake at 425 degrees Fahrenheit first for 15 minutes and then at 350 degrees F for the next 45 minutes. Your pumpkin pie is just done to pamper the sweet tooth of your friends, family or your sweetie pie on Thanksgiving.

    It is the festive time of year again and that means parties, fun, family, friends and food, yes glorious food! At this time of year those who have chosen to go on a diet (it's such a horrible word) usually throw all their hard work out the window and say to themselves "I've been good all year I'm going to eat what I like!" It doesn't take an intelligent person long to work out what happens next...that's right all those dress/pant sizes that came off with the dieting go straight back on PLUS MORE.

    On the other hand those that are following the Reduce Your Size Program are simply implementing a number of handy tips to insure that they either maintain or better still, keep reducing their size during this time of year.

    Here's ten hints we are going to 'let out of the bag' that will help you to cope with the silly season:

    1) Choose your plate size wisely. The larger the plate the more you will put on it and the more you will eat.

    2) Drink water. Half and hour before you eat have 3 glasses of water and then again 2 hours after you have eaten. This will help you to feel full and prevent over eating.

    3) Stay part of a conversation. If you are staying a part of a conversation, you will find you will automatically eat less. Just make sure you are not standing next to the nibbles table and taking handfuls without realizing.

    4) Bring a plate of food to a party. By bring a plate of food that comprises mainly of Foundation Foods (refer to the Reduce Your Size Program). This will help you to have something to snack on that won't reappear on your hips!

    5) Slow down, don't woof down Christmas dinner (or any other meal). In between each mouthful of food put your knife and folk down and sit there, enjoying the taste of the food and atmosphere around you.

    6) Have a 20 minute break in between each course. This will allow your body time to register how full it really is before you decide to fill up your plate again.

    7) Stop eating when you are 80% full. If you implement number 6 you will easily recognize when you have reached this mark and thus prevent your body from having to struggle with digesting a mountain of food.

    8) Get outside and move. Instead of sitting around at a Christmas function get everyone fired up for a game of backyard cricket, touch footy or even a leisurely stroll to the nearest park. Every bit of movement helps burn off the excess food.

    9) Have a juice in between meals once a day. Make sure it is a good combination like apple, carrot, beetroot, celery and ginger. This will help detoxify your body in between meals and prevent you from feeling tired and lethargic from all the partying.

    10) And the final secret we are going to give away is Do Not Deny Yourself. If you want something then have a small portion of it, eat it slowly and enjoy it!

    7 Ways to Decorate A Thanksgiving Table on a Budget!

    Thanksgiving is traditionally a day when we invite our loved ones into our home and give thanks for all we have. But with Christmas and other holidays looming just around the corner, it sometimes can be tough on the budget to put out a beautifully decorated table.     1.Develop a theme. A natural for this time of year, is, well...natural! Use the beauty of nature and the harvest as even our ancestors did to provide a beautiful and delicious theme for your Thanksgiving feast.

    2.Provide a backdrop to your table setting. You don't need fancy tablecloths for this day. Layer simply flat sheets, old bedspreads or quilts, and pretty fabric placemats all on the same table. Keep a solid color between each pattern, and it will shine!

    3.Go all out setting your table! I DON'T mean run to your nearest department store and buy the best china. Nonsense. This day is about simpler things than that. I do mean use what you have, all of it, even if it doesn't match. Set out plates and salad dishes and soup bowls. Use all your glassware. Bring out separate forks for salad and main dish. Fold pretty fabric or paper napkins and place at each setting. Go to a craft site and find a little place card you can make out of materials on hand. Here's a secret: The more generous you are with your table settings, no matter what the nature of the plates and cups and silverware, the more festive and lavish the room appears!

    4.Create a shimmering centerpiece out of natural materials! Bather 2 or three ceramic bowls, and fill them with nature finds...fir cones, acorns, nuts or seeds, even old potpourri! Nestle a pillar candle in each bowl, and set in the center of the table. Add a few pressed or silk fall leaves to the table around the bowls, and viola! Simple, elegant, and except for the candles(which you may have in your cupboard already) free! Never leave the candles unattended, and always make sure they will not burn down to or be blown into anything flammable.

    5.Use a small pitcher from your cupboard to bring fresh flowers or branches of fall leaves to the table. Use in the center of your candle arrangement for height and interest.

    6.Display pumpkins and gourds in the corners of the room, piled as they would in a barn. Add a few baskets to hold apples and pears, or smaller gourds and corn.

    7.Invest in one roll of fall hue ribbon for your tablescape. Tie a bow to the back of each chair, wind ribbon over the table through the centerpieces. Even use it as tiebacks for the curtains!

    Use what you have, bring in the bounty of harvest, and enjoy your loved ones without stealing from that holiday fund!

    How to Create the "Smokey Eyes" Look with How to Create the "Smokey Eyes" Look with Makeup

    This is a very sensual, dramatic and intense look, more appropriate for a young woman, as it can considerably harden the gaze in a mature woman, and by that age what we are after is for the mature woman to look fresh and youthful.


    This look is perfect for either a social gathering or a night out. It adds personality and strikingly transforms whoever wears it, although achieving a perfect finish isn’t always easy, as patience is required not to smudge the shadow. Following these instructions will make reaching a perfect result a lot easier.


    If we use a fixing agent –there are several brands of these on the market for eyeshadow and lips which can do the trick very well; once the product is on, we start to get rid of eye bags and imperfections with the corrector, and we blend the product in well.


    Create points of light with an illuminator in the area just below the eyebrows, the upper regions of the cheekbone, the space between the eyebrows, and on the chin.
    Apply a foundation as close as possible to the skin’s tone, or at most one tone higher.


    Blend the eyelids using loose powders: this way the shadows will then slide better, and apply a quantity of powders on the area beneath the eyes as this way we can later pick up any excess black shadow particles, and eliminate them with a makeup brush. With a neutral tone we unify the mobile eyelid, after which, as mentioned, we apply the black shadow in small amounts, to make sure we apply the right quantity.
    We may finish by underscoring the base of the lashes with a black pencil, and blending it well.


    In terms of eye shape: the only kind of person not to benefit from this look would be either someone with very small eyes -as dark tones sink the gaze- or someone with wide-set eyes as in these cases a natural look is more flattering.

    This look will give excellent results on large, and almond or slanted eyes.
    Other variants of this look are in grey tones, which look good on green, blue or brown eyes, and navy blue, also very flattering on chestnut, brown, green and blue eyes.

    Dark brown shadow goes well with green and blue eyes.

    The rouge needs to be very subtle, so as not to distract from the eyes: a pink tone will look right.

    And the lips should also be very soft in tone, in a pearly pink or very gentle rosy gloss or just plain lip gloss. The result is spectacular.
